Use a Dishwasher? Skip the Pre-Rinse
By Chris Baskind in The Daily Footstep
It used to be that dishwashers were considered a luxury. That’s changed . Dishwashers may use electricity, but they save so much water (and the energy used to heat it) compared to hand washing that they’re the home’s greenest convenience. But you can blow away all that extra efficiency by pre-rinsing. Modern dishwashers are designed to handle food reside. Just scrape the plates before you load — and don’t forget to take compostable waste out to your heap!

One problem at my house — the "food waste" filter in the dishwasher doesn't catch any leftover small particles like grits or coffee grounds that wind up stuck in the bottom of a mug. After washing the dishes, I find these all over the otherwise clean items. I need to find a better solution for this, or the pre-rinsing will continue in lieu of the post-washing whining.
