Start Your Week by Ditching Paper Coffee Filters

By Chris Baskind in The Daily Footstep

It’s a little thing. You won’t save the planet by saying goodbye to paper coffee filters — but you might save a few dollars and make a better Monday morning cup of coffee. Apart from being wasteful, paper filters absorb some of the delicate aromatic oils which give coffee its flavor. So try a metal basket-type filter, instead. They’ll fit any automatic drip coffee maker, and should last for years. Or take a cue from coffee enthusiasts who swear by French-press coffee makers. No filters, a fast brew, and rich coffee flavor. Who knew saving money could taste so good?

Good tip for better coffee indeed, unless you live in a county that was built on the paper industry. :)

Cellulose is one of the most abundant resources on the planet and it's in the products we use every single day. Tylenol tablets, maple syrup, ketchup, baby diapers, and yes, coffee filters all have cellulose in them that may very well have come from North Florida Pine Trees.

I'd be interested to see a full study on this. Metal filters and french presses do break. In some cases it seems logical that paper may actually be less impacting on the environment.

I've been loving my french press for years. Great tips on paperless coffee! Super Eco is pointing to your post today: http://www.supereco.com/news/2009/03/23/go-paperl... Thanks!

I recycle my used coffee filters to line the bottom of garedn pots to keep the soil in. I like perked coffee better, though.
