Broke? You Can Still Have Plenty of Fun

By Chris Baskind in Living

Taking a walk in the great outdoors

A skinny bank balance doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time. With a little creativity, there’s fun to be had for free. Here are some tips to get you started.

Yes, times are tough — especially if you’re one of the millions forced out of work by the recession. It can be hard enough just to pay bills and keep food on the table. So where’s a person to get a little fun around here?

In lots of places, if you take the advice of our friends over at EcoSalon. Author Sarah Irani catalogues twenty fun things you can do without spending a dime. Some should seem pretty obvious: It’s tough to beat getting outdoors for a walk and some fresh air. But how about trying your hand at a little guerrilla gardening, a growing movement that’s out to green urban environments in places you might not expect. You can trade books, CDs, and DVDs with your friends (or start your own private bookstore). Try your hand at stargazing, volunteering, or start a fitness program. And there’s always sex.

It all comes down to creativity. Having fun doesn’t have to involve taking a trip, buying some new entertainment device, or grabbing an expensive meal. What can you add to the list?

While having your daily walk or bicycle ride you can also pay a visit to your local library. Go through shelves and take with you something you have never consired buying or reading. You might suprise yourself.
