Are You Changing Your Car’s Oil Too Often?

By Chris Baskind in The Daily Footstep

In a down economy, it certainly makes sense to take care of your car. That includes keeping up with things like oil changes. But the commonly recommended interval for oil changes — every 3,000 miles — is probably overkill. Most car experts agree you could go twice as long without a change. It depends on you: If you’re doing short trips or lots of start-and-stop driving, your oil will take more of a beating. NPR’s Click and Clack use 5,000 miles as a rule of thumb. Some manufacturers recommend up to 7,500 miles. In doubt? Follow your car’s manual or talk to a qualified mechanic.
