Weekend Project: Get Ready for Spring!
By Chris Baskind in The Daily Footstep
No, it won’t be too much longer. You’re probably already seeing signs of spring, and the official turn of the season is exactly one month away. This would be a great weekend to do groundwork for the next growing season. Start by walking a few of your local nurseries and asking what people are planting this year. Garden Guides can help you search all the nurseries in your area. While you’re at it, check the local farmer’s market and see what early spring produce is already available. You’ll find a searchable list of farmer’s markets and Community Supported Agriculture groups at LocalHarvest.

Farmer's markets can also offer a surprising amount of goods during the winter months as well. My local market offers free-range, happy poultry and meat year round, along with a hearty selection of things like breads, jams, and even veggies. Winter also brings out more people selling crafts, like unique pottery for your kitchen, leather gloves and slippers, and hand knitted hats and scarves. So there's no need to wait untli spring!
You're quite right! Our local market is loaded with late winter produce, all grown here or in the surrounding counties. It's just that spring is usually when people who don't usually go to a farmer's market start to think about it. Here, at least, there's produce 12 months out of the year.
