Use Glass Food Containers for Storage and Cooking

Despite the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s recent insistence that plastics containing Bisphenol A are safe for general use, plenty of studies suggest otherwise. In any case, who needs more plastic? Opt for glass storage containers, particularly if you’re heating food in a microwave. Pyrexware and Frigoverre (from Italian company Bormioli Rocco) can go straight from freezer to oven, and should last for years. Hint: glassware makes a great holiday gift!

I received a very thoughtful direct communication from a reader I thought worth adding to this article.
While Pyrex-style glassware marked "microwave safe" is, indeed, usually safe for freezer-to-oven use, check your particular glassware's safety instructions to be sure this is the case. There have been rare cases of glassware shattering unexpectedly — eve when used according to manufacturer's recommendations — with obvious risk to the handler.
Of course, there are risks to the operation of any kitchen appliance, whether you're using glassware or some other heating container. Pyrex has a general list of safety precautions on their website here:

We've been looking out for packaged products (honey, jams, instant coffee) sold in glass jars that have good lids. These have been our affordable, hopefully green, storage solutions as of late!
This is a good approach. Glass jars can be recycled, of course, but there's nothing more efficient than reuse.
